DIY Wind-Up Doll Costume

I decided to be a doll for Halloween this year! I put everything together just a few days ago, so if you’re looking for a last-minute costume, this is totally do-able.

The necessities: a fun dress/skirt (mine is from H&M), makeup, white tights, flats/heels/mary janes. Optional: bows for hair, apron, diy wind-up key

I made the wind-up key by cutting and re-gluing a paper towel tube (rolling it up to make it thinner), then cutting two key shapes from cereal boxes and gluing them together for sturdiness. I cut two slits in the key and inserted it into the tube, then glued the outer flaps of the key to the tube. After that I painted it gold!

I attached the key to my dress by gluing it to a cardboard square, and inserting the square into the zipper of my dress. I used safety pins to pin the dress shut. If you decide to make this costume, you can also use shoulder straps to keep it in place, or attach it to a belt. I also thought about making a slit in a simple vest that I could wear over my dress, if the zipper didn’t work out.

My hair was super easy to do. I braided it on both sides then folded them over twice and secured them with a hair tie. Then I tied some red ribbon onto the “braidy bunches.” 😉

I borrowed my sister’s tights and wore my black character shoes. Any kind of flats would work, too!

My makeup was the fun part! Here’s a video of the whole process:

I couldn’t find any white fabric for an apron (sad, I know) so I got creative and tied a large doily onto my waist with some baker’s twine.

I’m so happy with how everything turned out! This has got to be the best costume I’ve made so far… Halloween lets me get really creative.

What are you being for Halloween?

<3 Kate
